Brief description of different kind of batteries
Non-Rechargeable batteries:
Alkaline Batteries:
The Alkaline battery is a very popular one, mostly known by it sizes AA, AAA, C, D and 9v.
In technical side, Alkaline batteries are a mixture of manganese dioxide, graphite, and electrolyte.Combined, they provide higher energy output than traditional Heavy Duty, which is made of manganese dioxide, carbon black (for electrical conductivity and moisture absorption), and zinc chloride electrolyte (which assists the chemical reaction). Normally, Alkaline batteries last up 3 times longer than Heavy Duty ones.
Lithium Batteries:
The lithium battery is a standard for high performance batteries for several years having an excellent power density and long shelf life. Is very popular in its versions: coin type (CR2032, CR2016, CR2016, etc), for uses in calculators, watches, computers, etc, and cylindrical batteries: for flashes of photo cameras (CR123, CR-2, CR-V3, CR-P2, 2CR-5), etc.
Silver Oxide Batteries:
This battery is mostly used for watches coming in button size. Normally, the same sizes are manufactured in alkaline version, but is not good idea to install alkaline battery in a watch unless the watch is a very cheap digital one. The most used size is the SR626SW, also called 377. The silver oxide batteries have normally 1.55 volts.
Alkaline button Cells:
This kind of batteries, is not so powerful like its silver oxide version and is cheaper. It can be found in cheap digital watches, calculators, laser pointers, and other devices. The most popular one is the AG-13, also called LR-44.
Zinc-Air Batteries:
This kind of batteries, with a voltage of 1.15-1.35 volts, is mostly used for hearing-aids applications, pagers and general medical uses. As zinc air batteries contains more than 1% of mercury is important to recycle after use it.
Rechargeable batteries:
Nickel Cadmium Batteries:
You ll find it as “Ni-Cd”. These batteries are formed by nickel hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and metalic cadmium. The Ni-Cd battery was the first popular rechargeable one and is today s market, the cheapest rechargeable battery.. Is ideal for low-draining devices as clocks, flashlights, T.V. remote controls, RC vehicles, etc. This battery has “memory effect” so is important to fully discharge it before charging in order to not lose it capacity and get less run time in between charges. Finally, the cadmium is a toxic metal and is harmful for the environment so it s very important to recycle the batteries. You can find the Ni-Cd batteries in different sizes as AA, AAA, C, Sub C, D, 9v, etc as in many different battery packs.
Nickel Metal Batteries:
The Ni-Mh battery is a newer battery generation having longer life than Ni-Cd ones, and is ideal for using in high draining devices like digital cameras, walkie talkies, cellular phones, walkmans, discmans, shavers, etc. You can find in AA, AAA, C, Sub C, D, 9v, A, N sizes as in different kind of battery packs. These batteries have no “Memory effect”,
Lithium Ion batteries:
The lithium ion battery produces the same energy of Ni-MH but weighs less and is smaller. Regarding the price, Li-Ion battery is more expensive. Mostly used in new electronic devices, you can see li-ion battery packs in new models of cellular phones, camcorders and notebooks. Each day you can see more and more models of cell phones batteries, video batteries and laptops batteries made with li-ion cells. It became popular for that devices as the battery makes up an important portion of the total weight in them, so using lithium ion batteries, the devices are lighter in weight and no need to have big size. Li-Ion batteries require a Li-Ion charger. Don t use a different charger as it can cause the batteries to explode.
